What is We Want to...Catch It! Stop It! Treat It!
August 3rd 2018
“We want to…Catch It! Stop It! Treat It!” campaign is the new 2018 / 2019 capital campaign and is raising funds for a new, up-to-date mammography unit in Medical Imaging at Battlefords Union Hospital (BUH).
A mammography unit is used for breast screening exams to detect breast cancers when they are small and treatable, as well as for diagnostic exams, where a lump or symptom is present and further follow-up is required. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, but can occur in men. In Canada, 1 in 8 women are expected to develop breast cancer during their lifetimes and mammography screening has proven to help improve survival rates.
BUH currently performs 2000 mammograms in a year and sees four to six (max) patients every day for diagnostic exams. Patients are from within The Battlefords as well as surrounding communities, including northern regions. The current mammography unit is ten years old, has reached its end of life and can require parts to be replaced or repaired. The new technology available can benefit patients with a decreased dosage of radiation, quicker scans and 3D technology that provides high quality, detailed images to provide greater accuracy and confidence in analyzing images to detect cancer.
The fundraising goal for the new mammography unit is over $500,000. Thank you for supporting this campaign, helping to detect breast cancers early, and for saving lives.
